A cold and lonely night
In category Art on 03 Aug 2008 @ 05:44 pm
I put this under art because it's going to have more pictures than words. That's basically the guide as to what category I choose. Anyway, straight to the point:

I was out at my parents last night (returning mum's car which she had kindly leant to me for a couple of weeks) and I happened to notice that it was a very dark and freezing night. Forgetting to take warm clothes helped with this revelation. Well as some of you might know, on a moonless night it's quite possible to see the Milky Way, (looking back towards the center of our galaxy you can see a cloud of stars across the night sky). If you haven't seen it, here is a picture of roughly how it looks to the naked eye.

And another brighter one done with the 50mm lens (so wide apature and high ISO letting me use a relatively short shutter speed). Unfortunately this was still a 15 sec shutter so you can see the stars have moved during that time to form little lines.

Using the 50mm lens I was only able to capture a small part of the milky way in that photo so I did a longer exposure using the ultra-wide angle lens which gives a better look at the Milky Way but the stars have moved significantly over the 5 or 6 minutes so it makes everything look blurred.

And finally, something I've been wanting to do for ages but never seem to get the right weather for, a 35 minute exposure looking West taking in a large section of the night sky. Last night was still a bit windier than I would have liked but the end result is still pretty neat. I might have a bit of a tweak of this one in photoshop when I get the chance but this is the original.

As usual, feel free to request larger copies of these (instructions on how to do this are here).
Enjoy!

The pier, (with awesome weird flare due to not having a lens hood):

If you think it could be made better please give it a quick go or describe what you mean and email me or leave me a comment and it would be much appreciated. I'm always looking for tips, tricks or just general advice to better my art (or hobby). I'd also appreciate better title suggestions (so there is no need to point out that mine is rubbish.
Thanks.
Hope you all have a good new year!

Decorating with photos
In category Art on 08 Nov 2007 @ 11:18 pm
In the spirit of being absolutely too lazy to put any of my photos on the wall I think someone, (mum?), made the suggestion that I should put them down on my coffee table and cover them with a piece of glass. That was because I was too lazy to go out and frame the larger 21.3" x 16" prints I had done ages ago. Instead I opted to cover the table with all the small photos I have got printed since I got my new camera and I'm just looking for a piece of glass 1250mm x 650mm to put over the top of them. At the moment, my coffee table looks like:

I have no idea where to buy glass from apart from looking it up in the yellow pages. I don't mind if it's the cheapest kind of glass (rolled sheet glass) because the distortions and imperfections would add to the look im going for. Ideally I'll get a sheet of glass tomorrow so I can use my coffee table over the weekend and until I do get some, I'll probably rearrange the photos a bit.
Let me know if you think of where to buy it from. Or if you think you know what it'll cost.
