New road rules

To start with, I'll point out that I'm 21 and not a P plater anymore. I think tougher laws will help curb the road toll but I don't think these are going to do it.

1. I've never been a fan of the passenger limit idea. Many times I drove each of my friends home when they had been drinking. It should be the responsibility of parents to teach their children to act responsibly. Designated driving can be a good thing.

2. Limiting engine capacities is just to look like they're doing something as far as I can tell. Compare the number of 6 and 8 cylinder cars to the number of turbo or supercharged cars. Why not restrict people based on the horsepower output? Because it's too hard to check. Instead they'll take the easy, and in my opinion useless, option.

3. I'm all for the licence ban on P-platers caught speeding. I'd support something like this for anyone caught speeding. I got a speeding ticket while on my P's for a single point off my licence. How much difference was this meant to make?

4. I think the 'hazardous' driving exam doesn't go far enough. As someone who got their licence in a country town where there were no other cars, busy roads, or even traffic lights, it might be impractical to try to force this. I think everyone should be encouraged to participate in an assertive driving course and defensive driving course. Don't leave it up to the government to enforce these things. PARENTS should be in charge of this one.

Most of these should apply to everyone, not just P-platers.

Provisional licence. Lasts for 3 years. Has very few points on it to lose before you're walking again. Can't have any blood alcohol reading.
