Windows activation unable to connect to server

If you have a problem re-activating windows after maybe installing a new motherboard.. Check that the bios date is correct. The activation program incorrectly says that it is unable to connect to the server.
This is the kind of problem that makes activation seem like a stupid idea. I install a new motherboard in a PC then have to work out what "unable to connect to activation server" really means as quickly as possible because I won't be onsite again for over 3 days at which point it will no longer be working.
