Power outage: St. Lucia and Taringa
In category General on 19 Oct 2005 @ 07:53 pm
I was sitting in my last lecture of the day philosophising about the meaning of life when all of a sudden we were throw into complete darkness and chaos. Then the wireless internet failed and I decided it was time to depart. Thei and I started walking to my car via level 6 of building 78 so we could see how far the darkness spread. All of our side of the river was dark and for as far as we could see towards my house.

On the long walk to my car (as it is now with the current state of parking) we were discussing the problem of the level of safety with all the lights out around the campus. While there were still emergency lights on in most buildings and the undercover car parks, if I was female I wouldn't feel safe walking across the campus alone, or even in a small group. I suppose there isn't really anything they can do but it's still a problem.

Once in my car we drove towards my house, finding more unlit lights, and very dark darkness indeed. After driving through Taringa which had no power we resigned ourselves to finding Toowong with a shortage of the good stuff and decided not to try cross Moggill Rd at Burns Rd with the posibility of no street lights, instead choosing to drive through to Brisbane St and onto High St. The traffic lights on High St/ Coronation Dr were out and there was a civillian girl in the middle of the road directing traffic but once we got around the corner we were surprised to find all the lights on in Toowong. I dropped Thei off at the Toowong Village train station and proceeded to my well-lit home.

I wonder if any of the businesses who lost power will sue for economic loss :P

Well i lost power at indooroopilly for about 30 seconds. I think i lost some network gear (will wait for it to calm down and see it its ok).

The only other things that seem to have gone nuts are the ac (its flashing and i don't know why) and the microwave (i am an IT student yet i cannot work out how to set the fucker).

Larger aircons also have a power-out timeout, to stop them all starting at the same time when the power comes back on and pulling the grid down again. Usually not much longer than 10 minutes.

There have been reports that the blackout was caused by a possum. I'm still trying to find an online source for this news so I can post a link.

I believe it was actually counter-spun electrons getting stuck in the centrifuge again.
